Bunnings Epoxy Kit vs a Professional Garage Floor
Advice · 29 Sep 2026
Hardware stores like Bunnings sell epoxy garage floor kits for a few hundred dollars. A professional floor costs a lot more. So is the difference worth it? Here's an honest comparison, including when a kit is the right choice.
The real difference is preparation
Most DIY kits tell you to clean the floor and etch it with an acid or etching solution. That removes some surface dirt, but it doesn't open up the concrete the way a diamond grinder does. Grinding is what gives a coating something to grip. Without it, the coating is more likely to lift, especially where hot car tyres sit.
A professional job also deals with cracks, old sealers, oil stains and moisture in the slab before anything goes down. These are the usual reasons DIY coatings peel.
Thickness and topcoat
Many kits are thinner, often water-based coatings that go on with a roller. A professional flake system builds up several layers to about 1.2 to 1.8 mm, with a hard-wearing clear topcoat over the flake. Thicker coatings with a proper topcoat handle scuffs, tyres and chemicals far better.
Side by side
| Cost | Kit: a few hundred dollars. Professional: from $75/m² |
|---|---|
| Preparation | Kit: clean and etch. Professional: diamond grind and crack repair |
| Thickness | Kit: thin roll-on coat. Professional: about 1.2–1.8 mm system |
| Topcoat | Kit: often none or thin. Professional: two coats of polyaspartic |
| Your time | Kit: a weekend or more of your own work. Professional: 2–3 days, done for you |
When a kit makes sense
A kit can be a good choice for a shed, a storage area you rarely drive on, or a floor you just want to freshen up for a sale. If you go this way, spend the most effort on preparation. Hiring a grinder for the day makes a bigger difference than which kit you buy.
When to use a professional
If you park in the garage every day, want a flake finish, have cracks or old coatings, or want a floor that lasts for years without peeling, a professional system is usually cheaper in the long run than redoing a kit. Taking off a failed coating adds cost to any future job.
Already tried a kit that's peeling?
Peeling DIY coatings are a common problem, and they can be fixed. The old coating has to be ground off before a new system goes down. Send us photos and we'll tell you what's involved. See our price guide or read the full garage floor guide.
