Can You Use Epoxy Outdoors? Why We Use Spray-Crete Outside

Advice · 3 Oct 2026

Epoxy is excellent indoors: garages, warehouses and kitchens. Outdoors is a different story. For driveways, patios, paths and pool surrounds we usually recommend spray-crete instead. Here's why.

The problem with standard epoxy outside

UV. Standard epoxy isn't UV-stable. In strong sun it can yellow and chalk over time, which is very noticeable on a light-coloured floor.

Heat. A sealed, smooth epoxy surface in full sun can get very hot underfoot.

Moisture from below. Outdoor slabs often sit straight on the ground without a moisture barrier. Moisture coming up through the concrete can push a sealed coating off from underneath.

Grip. A glossy epoxy finish gets slippery when wet, which matters on a driveway or around a pool.

Why spray-crete suits outdoors

Spray-crete is a polymer-modified cement coating, so it behaves more like the concrete it's bonded to. It's finished with a UV-stable, non-slip sealer, comes in colours that suit outdoor areas, and can be patterned with a stencil or slate look. It's what we use on driveways, patios and paths and pool surrounds.

So where does epoxy go?

Inside and under cover: garages, workshops, warehouses, factories and commercial kitchens. Our garage floors finish with a polyaspartic topcoat, which handles light through the roller door far better than a plain epoxy topcoat.
