Is an Epoxy Garage Floor Slippery? What Actually Helps

Advice · 29 Sep 2026

A smooth, glossy epoxy floor can be slippery when it is wet or oily, the same as polished tiles. A dry epoxy floor in a garage is generally no more slippery than bare concrete. The finish you choose makes the biggest difference.

Why some epoxy floors are slippery

The slippery ones are usually solid-colour coats with a high-gloss topcoat and no texture. Water, oil or tyre dust on top of that surface has nothing to grip. Thin DIY coatings that have worn through in patches can also be uneven underfoot.

How flake floors change that

A flake floor has vinyl chips broadcast across the base coat. After the clear topcoat goes on, the surface keeps a slight texture from the chips, which gives shoes and tyres more grip than a mirror-smooth coat. It also hides dust and water marks better.

Anti-slip additives

If you want more grip, a fine anti-slip grit can be mixed into the topcoat. The more grit you add, the grippier the floor, but the harder it is to mop. For a home garage, a light grit is usually the right balance. Outside areas such as pool surrounds and patios get wet often and need more texture than a garage.

Keeping it safe day to day

  • Wipe up oil and coolant spills straight away.
  • Put a mat where you step out of the car on rainy days.
  • Clean with a neutral cleaner; some household products leave a slippery film.
  • Sweep off sand and grit, which acts like ball bearings underfoot.

Tell us how you use the space

If you have kids, older family members, or the garage doubles as a gym or workshop, mention it when we come out. We'll recommend the right amount of texture for how the floor is used.
