Warehouse Line Marking: Planning Aisles, Walkways & Bays

Commercial · 3 Oct 2026

Good line marking keeps forklifts and people apart, keeps racking organised and makes a warehouse easier to run. Here's how to plan it so it works on day one and lasts.

What usually gets marked

  • Forklift aisles: the main traffic lanes between racking.
  • Pedestrian walkways: clear routes for people, separate from forklift lanes where possible.
  • Exclusion and hatched zones: around doors, fire equipment, switchboards and loading docks.
  • Bay and rack numbering: so stock and pickers can find their way.
  • Pallet and staging areas: marked boxes for inbound and outbound goods.

Plan it before you paint

Start from your rack plan and the way forklifts and people actually move through the building. Walk the routes, mark out the pinch points, and agree on a colour scheme everyone will understand. Your safety plan or WHS adviser may have specific requirements for your site, so check those first. We set out the marking to your plan.

Line marking with an epoxy floor

If you're coating the warehouse floor, do the line marking as part of the same job. It's set out on the new floor and finished with the coating, so it wears far better than paint on bare, dusty concrete. Our warehouse epoxy floors include aisle, walkway and bay line marking set out to your rack plan.

Keeping the warehouse running

Most warehouses can't stop. Work is usually staged at night and on weekends, bay by bay, so the site keeps operating through the week. Read more in coating a live warehouse without stopping work.

Re-marking an existing floor

If the layout is unchanged, new lines can go over the old ones. If aisles or bays are moving, the old lines are ground off first. Otherwise you can still see the ghost of them, which confuses drivers.
